The social face of cosmetic surgery

Having not researched cosmetic surgery previously, I was quite surprised with how much information is available for cosmetic surgery. The NHS website is particularly informative. Cosmetic surgery is based solely on improving a person’s physical appearance. A person choosing to have cosmetic surgery has done so completely independent of medical advice; it is a person’s choice. However, the increase in demand for cosmetic surgery does make you wonder why more people are choosing cosmetic surgery. Breast reduction was in the male and female top five most popular procedures in 2008. I fully support cosmetic surgery for people who are suffering psychological or indeed physical pain, which can be alleviated with cosmetic surgery. However, surgeries such as eyelid, ear pinning, face and neck surgery are borne out of vanity. Cosmetic surgery should not be a solution to fixing those imperfections which we think will dramatically improve our day to day lives. People suffering depression because of their physical appearance should seek counselling and professional advice before undertaking surgery. Is the increase in cosmetic surgery due to more physical abnormalities in the human race, or due to the availability and accessibility of cosmetic surgery? On some levels, yes cosmetic surgery may be the only answer. But on other levels, for more minor issues, will it resolve the underlying issue about why you chose to opt for cosmetic surgery in the first place? Society is forever thrusting physical perfection in our daily lives that it is no wonder why cosmetic surgeries are on the rise. The more people choose to undergo cosmetic surgery, the more people familiar and part of the norm it becomes. Thus, people having cosmetic surgeries are encouraging society to reinforce the idea. The vicious circle is resulting in people choosing to aim for the perfect human body that defies age and gravity. The irony being that a number of people are not choosing cosmetic surgeries for themselves. The social impact cosmetic surgery can have on younger generations who grow accustomed to the norm, will no doubt lead to an ever-growing cosmetic phenomenon.
